I was looking through a drawer at home recently and found a piece of my history: a vintage Bahrain Hilton polo shirt from the 1990s.

For many in Bahrain today, the “Hilton” name is synonymous with the sleek, 45-story tower that now dominates the Juffair skyline. But for me, this shirt is a portal back to a very different time—a time when I was living at the original Hilton while working for a Bahraini client who has since passed away.

Life at the “Old Hilton”

In the 1990s, the Hilton in the Diplomatic Area was my home away from home. It was a building that commanded respect—a solid, majestic structure with distinctive white tiered balconies that defined the skyline of that era.

Staying there wasn’t just about luxury; it was about being at the epicenter of the Kingdom’s business life. I remember the lobby as a grand, bustling space where the scent of expensive oud met the aroma of freshly brewed Arabic coffee. It was a place of high-stakes “presence.” Deals weren’t made over video calls; they were struck in those lounges over handshakes and long conversations.

A Legacy Left Behind

I was in Bahrain working closely with a local client—a man who represented the dignity and ambition of that generation. Finding this shirt today brought back sharp memories of our meetings, the projects we navigated, and the wisdom he shared.

He has since passed away, and the building I stayed in has evolved and changed its name, but the impact of that partnership remains. It reminds me that in the world of business and wealth, we often focus on the structures we build, but it is the relationships and the mentors we lose along the way that truly shape us.

When Juffair Was a Quiet Horizon

From the upper tiers of that old hotel, I used to look out toward Juffair. Back then, it was a quiet coastal neighborhood of low-rise villas and open sandy plots. Today, the Hilton brand has found a new home there, in a vertical city of neon and glass. The transformation of the landscape is staggering, yet holding this shirt makes the 1990s feel like only yesterday.

The True Currency of Success

Finding this shirt reminded me that while the skyline of Bahrain changes at a breathtaking pace, the fundamentals of business do not. The discretion, the personal loyalty, and the mutual respect I experienced during those years are still the most valuable assets we have.

The client is gone, the building has changed, and the shirt is a little faded—but the lessons learned in the heart of Manama three decades ago remain the foundation of everything I do today.
